ME? Join The Compact?
The Washoe County high school graduation rate has shown dramatic improvement recently, but is still far too low. This affects not only our youth, but the economic development of our region.
Now, a group of citizens and business leaders has come forward and created a way for each of us to do something specific to help improve the quality of our region’s education. It’s called the Washoe Ready For Life Community Compact.
The time for finger-pointing is past. It’s time for each of us to look in the mirror and understand clearly that better education starts with “ME.”
What is the Goal of the Compact?
The goal is to leverage the resources and skills of 17 (and counting) individual sectors, including business and professional organizations, non-profit agencies, faith-based groups, elected officials, parents, the Washoe County School District and many more, in a coordinated effort to establish and maintain education as a priority for our kids and our region’s economic development.
The Washoe Ready for Life Community Compact is an outgrowth of the Ready for Life movement administered through the statewide Nevada Public Education Foundation (NPEF). It is a collaborative idea first conceived by the Council for Excellence in Education, a group of local business and community leaders, based on successful efforts across America that establish contracts between schools and parents. The Washoe Ready For Life Community Compact extends this concept to the entire community.

Be a part of this historic initiative. As Washoe County brings its Community Compact to life, the NPEF has a goal to seed compacts statewide and has launched an initiative in Clark County in October 2011 in partnership with the Chamber Leadership Las Vegas class of 2011. Like the Washoe RFL Compact, the Graduate Advocate Initiative leverages multi-platform media outreach to spark the community to embrace an ethic that values education.
